Turtle Island Borneo

How to get there:
From the airport
Daily flights to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu morning and afternoon. The morning flight from KK leaves at 7 am and lands in Sandakan at 7.45 am just in time to get a taxi from the airport. The jetty is 9 km from the airport and cost 26 RM.

From the city
The jetty is 2,5 km from Sandakan centre. You can go by taxi at around 5-7 RM or do the walk in about ten minutes. Alternatively catch a bus from the local bus terminal at Jln Pryer.

The tour is a complete package. Through an agent it cost 650-800 RM per person. This includes speedboat transfer, air-con chalet accommodation on Pulau Selingaan and meals. Buying on the island is limited to beverage such as water, soda and beers at fair prices. Besides this the park takes a 60 RM entrance fee and 10 RM camera fee which goes to the conservation program.

Good to know
The trip to the island is one hour by (small) boat. It can be rough in bad weather. All day is spend on the island so remember a book, snorkelling gear etc. as the turtles don’t come until after dawn.

Must know
NO FLASH – it disorients the turtles and hatchlings, who use moonlight to locate the sea.

Take nothing but photos
and leave nothing but footprints…

Hi, we are booked for a night’s stay in November. Could you let me know if there is a route or track to have a late afternoon or early morning jog. Not necessarily an actual path, just a route which is safe and suitable to run without disturbing anyone?

We are coming to Borneo in September. What will we be able to see this month? Is there a migration or birthing or something special? What would be the best time of the month to go to Turtle Island

    Thanks for your help. Jeff

We visited September 6th-7th, we had a fantastic stay, we loved every minute of it. Our visit coincided with mt niece’s birthday so we sponsored the nest we witnessed for her and are really disappointed we didn’t recieve the promised email informing of the hatching of the nest and photos. It was nest number 3763 dated September 6th, we would really appreciate it if you could update us on the outcome of the nest and if possible supply the photo’s, my niece was so looking forward (as were we) to hearing about this.
    Many thanks

Hi there, what months do turtles lay their eggs? Thank you, M

  • Karen says:

Yes I do. Is there a way to arrange to come back the same night?

    • admin says:

I don’t think so. The trip is arranged as a whole tour but try to contact one of the agents under Booking. You might be able to find a solution but you shall be aware that you probably have to pay the boat yourself – and it is after all a one hour boat trip.

    Thank you,

Hello, we are planning to visit Turtle Islands. Is it easy for disabled people to arrive at the island – ie is there a Jetty for the boat – so that they can get off the boat easily? And how far is the centre from the disembarking place? Do you have transportation that the disabled people can use?

    • admin says:

      Dear Jay.
Actually I will say no to your question. I will not say it can’t be done but if you are asking for easy the answer is no. There is a jetty in Sandakan but on Turtle Island you jump from the boot to go ashore. From the beach you have to go through the sand to the accommodation. Also the egg laying and setting the hatchlings free is on the beach so I wouldn’t say it is easy but again anything is possible.
Hope you can use the answer.

Hello I am looking to go to turtle island. Is it necessary to book through an agent or is it possible to go independently. I am an independent traveller’s and would like to join an existing group that is going so that I do not have to pay the single traveller’s fee.

Hi Mark just starting to do some home work as I will be in Borneo in May.
Id like to visit the Turtle islands and not some tours are expensive.
I grew up in Borneo and lived in Angus Keith’s house so I will be also visiting a few places in Sandakan.
We used to when I was younger visit the Turtle Islands often well it seemed at the time like every weekend.
Would you be able to point me to any great ideas.
I will be travelling with two others.

      Regards Penny Fox
